Underground Downspout Drainage System Care Sheet

This care sheet provides detailed instructions for maintaining your newly installed underground downspout drainage system. Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your system.

Initial Setup and First Week Care

After installation, the first week is crucial for the system to settle.

  • Avoid Heavy Foot Traffic: Keep heavy foot traffic away from the newly trenched areas for at least 72 hours.

  • Watering: Lightly water the disturbed areas daily for the first week, unless there is significant rainfall. This helps the soil settle and grass to re-establish.

  • Monitor for Settling: Observe the trench lines for any signs of significant settling. Minor settling is normal and can be filled with topsoil if needed.

Ongoing Maintenance (Monthly/Quarterly)

Regular maintenance will prevent common issues and keep your system functioning efficiently.

  • Debris Removal:

    • Downspout Openings: Periodically check the downspout openings for leaves, twigs, and other debris that could enter the system.

    • Catch Basins/Inlets: If your system includes catch basins or inlets, remove any accumulated debris (such as leaves, dirt, or silt) from them every month or as needed. This is crucial for preventing clogs.

  • Visual Inspection:

    • Downspout Connections: Inspect the connection points where your downspouts enter the underground pipes. Ensure they are secure and free of cracks or leaks.

    • Discharge Point: Check the discharge point of your system (e.g., pop-up emitter, gravel trench) to ensure it is clear of obstructions and draining properly.  You can do this by placing a hose at the entry point and going to the discharge point (or do your observing during significant rain).

  • Hosing Down: Occasionally, if you notice slow drainage, you can hose down the downspout openings with a garden hose to flush out any minor blockages.  If you continue to have blockage, contact your Todd’s Services Representative.  Todd’s Services Inc. offers drainage line inspection with specialized equipment.

Seasonal Maintenance (Spring and Fall)

Prepare your system for seasonal changes to prevent weather-related damage.

  • Spring Clean-up:

    • Perform a thorough inspection and debris removal after winter.

    • Check for any signs of frost heave that might have affected the piping.

  • Fall Preparation:

    • Prioritize debris removal before the heavy leaf-falling season.

    • Consider installing downspout screens or filters to minimize the amount of leaves entering the system.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Slow Drainage Debris accumulation, partial clog Remove debris from inlets/downspouts, flush system with water
Standing Water at Discharge Clogged discharge point, grading issues Clear obstructions at discharge, verify proper grading
Water Pooling Near House Disconnected downspout, damaged pipe Reconnect downspout, inspect pipe for damage (may require professional help)
Foul Odor Stagnant water, organic decomposition Flush system thoroughly, ensure proper drainage

Important Considerations

  • Professional Inspection: Consider a professional inspection every 2-3 years, especially if you notice recurring issues or if your system is extensive.

  • Avoid Planting Over System: Do not plant trees or large shrubs directly over the underground drainage pipes. Their roots can eventually infiltrate and damage the system.

  • Heavy Equipment: Avoid driving heavy machinery or vehicles over the buried pipes, as this can crush or damage them.

  • Chemicals: Do not pour harsh chemicals, paint, or grease down your downspouts, as they can damage the pipes and harm the environment.

  • Record Keeping: Keep a record of your maintenance activities, including dates and any issues encountered. This can be helpful for future troubleshooting or if professional assistance is needed.
