Composite Deck Care Sheet

With proper care and maintenance, your new composite deck will provide years of enjoyment with minimal effort. This care sheet provides in-depth instructions to help you keep your deck looking its best.

Understanding Composite Decking

Composite decking is a composite material made from recycled wood fibers and/or plastic. This composition makes it highly durable, resistant to rot, insects, and splintering, and low-maintenance compared to traditional wood decks. However, like any outdoor surface, it requires regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. Trex, Timbertech, and many other companies have made long-lasting products that have changed the deck-building industry.

Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning is essential to prevent dirt, debris, and environmental elements from accumulating and potentially staining your deck.  Before cleaning, read the manufacturer's recommendations carefully.  The information below is general information only, and the manufacturer's label or website should always be your guide.

Basic Cleaning

For general cleaning, a simple wash with soap and water is usually sufficient.

  • Frequency: At least twice a year, or more often if needed due to heavy use or environmental factors.

  • Materials:

    • Mild dish soap or a composite deck cleaner

    • Soft-bristle brush or broom

    • Garden hose

  • Instructions:

  1. Clear all furniture and debris from the deck surface.

  2. Hose down the entire deck to wet the surface and remove loose dirt.

  3. Mix a solution of mild dish soap and water (or follow the instructions on your composite deck cleaner).

  4. Apply the cleaning solution to the deck surface.

  5. Using a soft-bristle brush or broom, gently scrub the deck boards in the direction of the grain.

  6. Thoroughly rinse the entire deck with a garden hose, ensuring all soap residue is removed.

  7. Allow the deck to air dry.

Removing Stains

Prompt attention to stains is crucial for easy removal.

Stain Type Recommended Cleaning Method
Food and Beverage Clean promptly with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. For stubborn stains, a commercial deck cleaner designed for composites may be used.
Grease and Oil Use a degreaser specifically designed for outdoor surfaces or a composite deck cleaner. Apply according to product instructions, scrub gently, and rinse thoroughly.
Dirt and Grime Regular basic cleaning (as described above) should suffice. For embedded dirt, a pressure washer (with caution) may be used.
Mold and Mildew While composite decking is mold-resistant, mold can grow on surface dirt. Use a composite deck cleaner with mold inhibitors or a solution of bleach (oxygenated bleach is preferred) and water (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Always test in an inconspicuous area first and rinse thoroughly.
Scuff Marks Gentle scrubbing with warm, soapy water may remove light scuff marks. For more persistent marks, a soft eraser can sometimes be effective. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

Using a Pressure Washer

A pressure washer can be used on composite decking, but extreme caution is advised to avoid damaging the surface.

  • Pressure Setting: Use a fan-tip nozzle and keep the pressure below 1,500 PSI (pounds per square inch).

  • Distance: Maintain a minimum distance of 8-12 inches from the deck surface.

  • Technique: Move the wand continuously and evenly, following the grain of the boards. Avoid concentrating the spray in one area.

  • Testing: Always test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not damage the decking.

  • Caution: Improper use can etch the surface, leading to permanent damage and voiding your warranty.

Preventing Damage and Stains

Proactive measures can significantly extend the life and appearance of your Trex deck.

  • Furniture Pads: Place felt pads or rubber caps under the legs of all furniture to prevent scratches and scuff marks.

  • Grill Mats: Always use a non-porous grill mat under barbecues and outdoor cooking equipment to catch grease and food spills.

  • Potted Plants: Use saucers or stands under potted plants to prevent water stains and trapped moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew growth beneath the pots. Ensure proper drainage to avoid water accumulation.

  • Snow Removal: Use a plastic shovel for snow removal. Avoid metal shovels, which can scratch or damage the deck surface. For ice, use calcium chloride-based ice melt, as rock salt can leave a white residue.

  • Chemical Spills: Immediately clean up any spills of harsh chemicals, paints, or sealants. While Trex is durable, some chemicals can stain or damage the surface if left to dry.

Long-Term Considerations

While composite decking is low-maintenance, a few long-term considerations can further enhance its longevity.

  • Annual Inspection: Inspect your deck annually for loose fasteners, signs of wear, and areas that may require cleaning.

  • Ventilation: Ensure good air circulation underneath your deck to prevent moisture build-up. Blocked ventilation can lead to mold and mildew issues on the underside of the deck and joists.

  • Repairs: For any significant damage or concerns, please contact your Todd’s Services.

Important Notes

  • Never use abrasive cleaners or steel wool on your composite deck, as these can scratch or dull the surface.

  • Avoid using solvents or paint removers unless specifically recommended by Trex, Timbertech, or other manufacturers for a particular type of stain.

  • Do not sand or power-wash with more than 1,500 PSI, as this can damage the composite material.

  • Always read and follow the instructions on any cleaning product you use on your deck.

Following these guidelines will help ensure your new composite deck remains a beautiful and functional addition to your home for many years to come. For further questions or specific product information, please refer to the official Trex website or your Todd’s Services Representative.
