Our Story — The History of Todd’s Services, Inc.

From a humble lakeside lawn-mowing start in 1979 to becoming one of Michigan’s most respected family-owned landscaping companies, the story of Todd’s Services Inc. is one built on grit, growth, and generational teamwork.

Beginnings on the Lakes

In 1979, two young brothers — Todd LaButte (15) and his younger brother Kurt LaButte (8) — turned everyday chores into an entrepreneurial adventure. Growing up on a chain of lakes connected by the Huron River in Michigan, the boys would haul a lawn mower by boat to neighbors’ properties, cutting grass and helping their community. That early experience wasn’t just about making money — it formed the foundation of a work ethic and sense of family commitment that still defines the company today.

Growing up in a household of eight siblings, Todd and Kurt learned teamwork early, and that solid family backbone shaped both their lives and their business. Todd’s Services Inc. was born from those summers of pushing mowers, solving problems, and serving neighbors with a smile.

A Growing Business

Over the years, Todd’s Services expanded far beyond mowing. The company became a full-service landscaping and outdoor construction firm, known for quality work, strong community involvement, and dependable service. Customers today know Todd’s Services for everything from landscape design and installation to hardscapes, commercial/residential maintenance, irrigation systems, sprinkler services, and more. 

Since its founding, Todd’s Services has remained family owned and operated. Today, Kurt LaButte leads the company, along with three of his four sons — Austin, Mikal, and Keegan — each of whom plays an active leadership role in the business, carrying on the legacy started by Todd and Kurt over four decades ago.

Todd’s Services Inc. — Company Timeline

  • Todd’s Services Inc. is founded by brothers Todd and Kurt LaButte — ages 15 and 8 — mowing lawns from their family’s chain-of-lakes home.

  • The company leases its first commercial property and expands to include softscapes and hardscapes.

    They purchased their first hydroseeder, expanding large-scale outdoor soil and planting capabilities.Also incorporated the company and became 50/50 partners.

  • Todd’s Services purchases Auto Rain and begins its irrigation department.

    Construction begins on the company’s current headquarters on M-36 in Hamburg Township, Michigan.

    Todd’s Services has the largest hydroseeder in the world, custom-built to meet the needs of larger landscape and erosion-control projects.

  • Headquarters expanded to support growth and accommodate new equipment and staff.

  • Company founder Todd LaButte passes away — leaving an enduring legacy in the business and community.

  • Austin LaButte, Kurt’s son, enters company leadership and becomes a partial owner of the business

  • Mikal LaButte, Kurt's son, stepped into leadership roles and became a partial owner of the business.

  • A new branch opens in Kingsley on M-37, Michigan, near Traverse City — marking expansion into northern Michigan.

  • Todd’s Services purchases Mullett Lake Landscape and Tree Company and starts a new branch in Indian River, Michigan.  Located on S Straits Hwy.
