Freestanding Segmental Block Wall Care Sheet

Congratulations on your newly installed freestanding segmental block wall! With proper care and maintenance, your wall will remain a beautiful and functional addition to your property for years to come. This care sheet provides in-depth instructions to help you maintain your wall's integrity and appearance.

Initial Settling Period

For the first few weeks after installation, your wall will undergo a natural settling process. This is normal and to be expected.

  • Avoid Disturbing the Wall: Refrain from leaning heavy objects against the wall or allowing excessive foot traffic directly on or near the wall's base during this period.

  • Monitor for Changes: Keep an eye out for any significant shifts, cracks, or unusual settling. While minor adjustments are normal, anything that looks concerning should be reported immediately.

Drainage and Water Management

Proper drainage is crucial for the long-term stability of your segmental block wall.

  • Maintain Clear Drainage: Ensure that the area around the base of the wall remains free of debris, leaves, and other obstructions that could impede water flow.

  • Avoid Direct Water Spray: Do not direct downspouts, sprinkler heads, or garden hoses directly at the wall for extended periods. Excessive water saturation can compromise the wall's stability.

  • Address Pooling Water: If you notice water pooling at the base of the wall, it indicates a drainage issue that needs to be addressed promptly. This could be due to grading problems or obstructed weep holes.

Cleaning and Stain Removal

Regular cleaning will help maintain the aesthetic appeal of your wall.

  • Routine Cleaning: For general dirt and grime, use a soft brush or broom to sweep away loose debris. A gentle rinse with a garden hose is also effective.

  • Stubborn Stains: For more persistent stains, such as dirt, mildew, or efflorescence (a white powdery substance), follow these guidelines:

    • Mild Soap Solution: Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water. Apply with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly.

    • Commercial Cleaners: For severe stains, use a cleaner specifically designed for concrete or masonry products. ALWAYS test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't discolor or damage the blocks. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

    • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use harsh acids, wire brushes, or high-pressure washers, as these can damage the blocks or mortar.

  • Efflorescence: Efflorescence is a natural occurrence in concrete products and usually subsides over time. It can be removed with a stiff brush and water, or a specialized efflorescence cleaner if necessary.

Vegetation Management

Vegetation around your wall can enhance its appearance, but also requires careful management.

  • Keep Plants a Safe Distance: Ensure that plants, shrubs, and tree roots are not growing too close to or into the wall. Roots can exert pressure and cause damage over time.

  • Trim Overhanging Branches: Trim any tree branches that are directly overhanging the wall to prevent leaves and debris from accumulating on top of or behind the wall.

  • Weed Control: Regularly remove weeds growing in or around the wall to prevent them from taking root and potentially undermining the structure. Weeds growing between blocks can expand and create gaps and shifts, potentially compromising the wall's durability. On the other hand, healthy plants, grass, and foliage around the wall can be beneficial as they help hold the soil in place and provide a firm foundation, preventing ground shifting.

Winter Care

While segmental block walls are designed to withstand various weather conditions, some precautions are beneficial during winter.

  • Remove Snow Carefully: When removing snow, avoid using metal shovels directly against the wall, which could chip or scratch the blocks. Use a plastic shovel or broom.

  • Avoid De-icing Salts: When possible, do not use de-icing salts containing chlorides on or near your wall. These can cause spalling (flaking or chipping) and deterioration of the concrete blocks. If melting agents come into contact due to their proximity to pathways or driving areas, rinse them off as soon as the weather is above freezing. Professional snow and ice management companies may or may not offer washing services, so plan accordingly and discuss this with them during the bidding process if you would prefer not to do them yourself.

Inspections and Repairs

Regular inspections can help identify potential issues before they become major problems.

  • Annual Inspection: We recommend a thorough inspection of your wall at least once a year, preferably in the spring after the ground has thawed. Look for:

    • Cracks or chips in the blocks.

    • Loose or shifting blocks.

    • Signs of erosion at the base of the wall.

    • Drainage issues.

    • Efflorescence that isn't dissipating.

  • Prompt Repairs: If you notice any damage or issues, contact Todd’s Services for assessment and repair. Addressing minor problems early can prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the line.
