Brick Paver Patio/Pathway Care Guide

Congratulations on your new paver patio or pathway! With proper care, your pavers will provide lasting beauty and functionality for years to come. This guide outlines essential maintenance practices to help you protect your investment.

I. Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning will help maintain the pristine appearance of your pavers.

A. Sweeping

  • Frequency: Regularly sweep your patio or pathway to remove leaves, dirt, and other debris, preventing organic matter from breaking down and staining the pavers.

  • Tools: Use a stiff-bristled broom; avoid wire brushes, which can damage the paver surface.

B. Washing

  • Light cleaning: For general dirt and grime, rinse the area with a garden hose and a mild detergent. Use a soft brush to scrub stubborn spots.

  • Pressure washing: While pressure washing can be effective for deep cleaning, use it with caution.

    • Low pressure: Use a wide-angle nozzle and a low-pressure setting (under 1200 PSI) to prevent dislodging joint sand or damaging pavers.

    • Distance: Maintain at least 12 inches between the nozzle and the paver surface.

    • Re-sanding: Replenish joint sand as needed after pressure washing.

C. Joint Sand Maintenance

The joint sand between your pavers is crucial for stability and weed deterrence.

  • Replenishment: Inspect joints regularly and sweep in new polymeric sand or standard joints sand as needed, as joint sand may erode or settle over time.

  • Weed prevention: Proper installation and regular replenishment of joint sand significantly reduce weed growth. For persistent weeds, consider a paver-safe weed killer.

II. Stain Removal

Address spills and stains promptly to prevent permanent damage.

Stain Type Recommended Action
Grease and Oil Blot excess with paper towels. Apply a specialized paver degreaser or a paste of dish soap and warm water. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly.
Rust Use a rust remover specifically designed for concrete or pavers. Follow product instructions carefully.
Moss/Algae Apply a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, or a commercial moss and algae remover. Scrub and rinse.
Organic (Leaves, Berries) Scrub with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. For stubborn stains, a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used, followed by thorough rinsing. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

IV. Winter Care

A. Snow and Ice Removal

  • Shoveling: Use a plastic shovel or one with a plastic edge to prevent scratching the pavers.  If you are hiring a professional snow and ice management company, do not assume they will do this.  Communicate your expectations regarding the equipment you would like to use to them during the bidding process.

  • De-icers: Use rock salt or other de-icers sparingly, as they can damage pavers or alter their color. Calcium chloride-based de-icers are generally safer.  When hiring a professional snow and ice management company, discuss the available options and clearly communicate your expectations regarding surface damage prevention versus maximum safety.

B. Freeze-Thaw Cycle

  • Proper drainage: Ensure adequate drainage for your patio or pathway to prevent water pooling and freezing, which can lead to cracking or heaving.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure your paver patio or pathway remains a beautiful and functional addition to your home for many years. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your Todd’s Services representative.
