Outdoor Lighting System Care Sheet

This care sheet provides comprehensive instructions for maintaining your newly installed outdoor lighting system, ensuring its longevity, optimal performance, and continued beauty. Regular care will help prevent issues and preserve the aesthetic appeal of your landscape lighting.

I. Initial Setup and Acclimation (First 2 Weeks)

A. System Activation and Testing

Upon installation, your lighting system has been fully tested. However, a quick check of all fixtures is recommended within the first 24 hours to confirm proper operation after settling.

  • Initial Check: Verify all lights turn on at the scheduled time (usually dusk) and off at the scheduled time (usually dawn or a set time).

  • Fixture Orientation: Gently adjust any fixtures that may have shifted slightly during the settling process to ensure they are pointing in the desired direction.

B. Observing System Performance

Pay close attention to how the system performs during the initial weeks.

  • Light Coverage: Observe if the light distribution is as intended and if any areas are too bright or too dim.

  • Timer Accuracy: Confirm that the timer is accurately reflecting your desired on/off times.

  • Unusual Behavior: Report any flickering, non-functioning lights, or unusual noises from the transformer immediately.

II. Routine Maintenance (Monthly)

A. Cleaning Fixtures

Dust, dirt, and water spots can accumulate on fixtures, reducing light output and clarity.

  • Wipe Down: Use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe down the lenses and exteriors of all light fixtures. For stubborn dirt, a mild soap solution can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners.  See manufacturer's recommended cleaning for detailed product suggestions.

  • Clear Debris: Remove any leaves, spiderwebs, or other debris that might be obstructing the light or ventilation of the fixtures.

B. Checking Bulbs/LEDs

While LEDs have a long lifespan, it's good practice to visually inspect them.

  • Visual Inspection: Look for any signs of dimming, flickering, or discoloration.

  • Non-functioning Lights: If a light is not working, first check its connection at the fixture. Contact your Todd’s Services representative if any repair is required.

C. Inspecting Wiring and Connections

Regularly check visible wiring for any issues.

  • Cable Integrity: Ensure all cables are properly buried or secured and that there are no exposed wires or signs of damage from gardening tools or pests.

  • Connections: If comfortable, gently check connections at the transformer and individual fixtures to ensure they are secure. Always turn off the system at the breaker before checking connections.

D. Trimming Vegetation

Overgrown plants can obstruct light paths and reduce the effectiveness of your system.

  • Pruning: Trim back any shrubs, branches, or tall grasses that are blocking light from reaching its intended target or casting unwanted shadows.

  • Clear Around Fixtures: Ensure there is adequate space around fixtures for proper ventilation and heat dissipation.

III. Seasonal Maintenance (Quarterly/Bi-Annually)

A. Transformer Inspection

The transformer is the heart of your low-voltage lighting system.

  • Ventilation: Ensure the transformer's vents are clear of debris to prevent overheating, if applicable.

  • Mounting: Check that the transformer is securely mounted and not exposed to excessive moisture.

  • Output Voltage (Professional): If you notice significant dimming across the system, a professional can check the output voltage to ensure it's within the optimal range.

B. Adjusting Fixtures

As landscaping grows, fixtures may need re-aiming.

  • Re-aiming: Adjust the angle and direction of fixtures to compensate for plant growth or changes in your landscape design. This helps maintain the desired lighting effect.

C. Replacing Bulbs (if applicable)

For systems with traditional halogen or incandescent bulbs.

  • Power Off: Always turn off the power to the lighting system at the circuit breaker before replacing bulbs.

  • Cool Down: Allow bulbs to cool completely before touching them to avoid burns.

  • Correct Type: Use only the exact bulb type and wattage specified for your fixture to avoid damage to the transformer or fixture.

D. Grounding and Stability

Ensure fixtures remain stable and properly grounded.

  • Check Stakes: Verify that ground stakes are firmly in the soil and that fixtures are not leaning or sinking.

  • Leveling: Adjust any fixtures that appear crooked or uneven.

IV. Troubleshooting Common Issues

A. Entire System Not Working

  • Check Breaker: Ensure the circuit breaker for your outdoor lighting system has not tripped.

  • Transformer Power: Verify that the transformer is plugged in and receiving power.

  • GFCI Outlet: If plugged into a GFCI outlet, check if it has tripped. Press the "Reset" button.

  • Photocell/Timer: Ensure the photocell (light sensor) is not blocked and the timer is set correctly.

B. Individual Lights Not Working

  • Bulb/LED: Check if the bulb is burnt out (for traditional systems) or if the LED has failed.

  • Connection: Ensure the wire connection to the fixture is secure and free of corrosion.

  • Wiring Damage: Inspect the wire leading to the non-functioning light for any cuts or breaks.

C. Lights Flickering

  • Loose Connection: This is often a sign of a loose connection at the fixture or transformer.

  • Voltage Drop: If multiple lights flicker, there might be a voltage drop issue, requiring professional assessment.

  • Faulty Bulb/LED: A failing bulb or LED can cause flickering.

D. Lights Dimming

  • Dirt/Debris: Clean the lenses of the fixtures.

  • Voltage Drop: This can indicate too many fixtures on one line, undersized wire, or a transformer issue.

  • Aging Bulbs: Traditional bulbs dim over time as they near the end of their life.

V. Winterization

While most modern outdoor lighting systems are designed for year-round use, certain precautions can extend their life in harsh winter conditions.

  • Snow Removal: Gently remove heavy snow accumulation from fixtures to prevent excessive weight and ensure light output.

  • Ice: Avoid using sharp tools to remove ice from fixtures, as this can cause damage.

  • Drainage: Ensure areas around ground-mounted fixtures have good drainage to prevent water from freezing and potentially damaging the fixture base.

VI. Professional Servicing

We recommend a professional inspection and tune-up of your outdoor lighting system at least once a year. Our technicians can:

  • Perform thorough cleaning and adjustments.

  • Check electrical connections and voltage levels.

  • Identify and replace worn components.

  • Update your system with new technologies if desired.

  • Address any complex troubleshooting issues.
